Désirée Zamorano with her new book: Dispossessed

Désirée Zamorano with her new book: Dispossessed In-Person

Education faculty member Désirée Zamorano will be presenting her new book.  Books will be available for purchase for book signing.

"This novel, based on historical events, traces the life of Manuel, a boy who is separated from his parents during the mass expulsion of Mexican Americans and Mexican nationals in Los Angeles during the 1930s. As he grows into an adult he is surrounded by remarkable women. Generous Amparo, who brings the mute boy into her home with gentle tenderness, then Lizette, striking and vivacious, who captivates his passion and loyalty. A sweeping family saga with resilience, perseverance, and enduring love at its core, Dispossessed follows Manuel as he creates a life of value and dignity, while always searching for his missing family, the missing pieces of his heart.

Désirée Zamorano is the author of the highly acclaimed literary novel, The Amado Women, which will be re-released by Lee and Low in 2025. An award-winning and Pushcart prize nominee short story writer her work is often an exploration of issues of invisibility, injustice or inequity. A selection of her writing can be found in Catapult, Cultural Weekly, The Kenyon Review Online and Akashic’s South Central Noir. “Caperucita Roja” was chosen as a distinguished short story in Best of American Mystery and Suspense, 2022. Her novel Dispossessed is forthcoming from RIZE Press, fall 2024 while the University of Nevada Press will be publishing her collection of short stories spring, 2026.
